Coming This Week: April 17th – 23rd

It’s a long running joke with people we work with, that we know someone in every city.  We are lucky to have a large family but most of all it’s friends we have gained.  This week we will be getting to see some of our favorite people while making the trip from Seattle to Albuquerque.

Song of the Week: Shortyville – Trombone Shorty

Week in Review:

We had a pretty wild week.  Spend a fantastic couple of days with friends in Seattle, they used to do the same job we do, now their adventures are a whole lot more fun.  During the first few years we were on the road a great deal of effort was put out to find live music or catch acts we liked on tour.  It quickly got frustrating to be a day behind some group for months.  While we aren’t the best at seeking out the bands see live, there are times it all comes together.  That is how we got to see Trombone Shorty in Portland on Friday.  While the actual venue wasn’t ideal (Keller Auditorium) he put on a good show.  Really makes you want to hit Jazz Fest and see all these guys in their element.  Our quick trip back to Portland afforded the opportunity to do a tour of local breweries via bike, something we have wanted to do for a while.  I will admit that after the second stop I was much more comfortable on the bicycle, wonder why?  It really was fun and I think we could easily go again, hitting more of the 65+ breweries in Portland.

Amazing Amazon Lockers

Something we often get asked about is, how we get our mail.  Managing your post is a fairly difficult aspect of road life.  Most people we know have a mailbox (not a PO box but a UPS Store or the like).  This requires calling and arranging for the collected contents to be shipped out.  We have had issues in the past with particular places falling short in expected service. It is a headache but a necessity.

Online shopping is whole different ballgame.  Choices have to be made based on logistics, should I ship to my mailbox and pay for it to be shipped to me later or figure out a time when we will be at one hotel for an extended period.  Amazon has come up with a way to help us out, Amazon Lockers.  These gems save us and provide some logistical wiggle room.

The bright yellow lockers are located in a variety of locations (think 7 Eleven), allowing us to ship not to a hotel but to a locker that might just be on the way to an event site.  We are stuck at a hotel if we need to wait for a package.  With the Locker delivery option we just grab a cell phone, scan in the code at the selected locker and let getting a package fit into our day.  These were implemented due to issues some customers were having with packages getting stolen from their front step.  While we aren’t the typical user, it’s truly amazing.  I would recommend these to anyone shopping Amazon, take a look and see if there is one along your commute and for those road warriors, enjoy another wonderful benefit of Prime.

Coming This Week: April 10th – 16th

This week we are enjoying sunny Seattle, not kidding the weather is fantastic up here right now.  I am convinced that the “rainy Seattle” is a myth to keep people from moving up here.  Next week we are in Albuquerque, this is the first time we have had an actual show.

Why the “Coming this Week”

Each week we sit down and put together the “Coming this Week” post, our little post with maps, pictures, notes, and sometimes a “song of the week.  This Sunday post is meant to serves two purposes.  The first is it is sort of a diary for us.  There are lots of things I mention but don’t write full posts about, plus those pictures are a little way to have some fun.  The second and most important reason is that we just travel so much and move so frequently that it’s the only way to let people know where are going to be.

One of my favorite things about moving around this much, is all the people we have an opportunity to run into.  I post the travel map because honestly I forget where some people live and there have been some amazing path crossings throughout the years we have been on the road.  This month alone we were able to see Lynn from Rocky Creek and the fabulous duo who run GoPetFriendly.com.  That latter one is pretty funny.  I received a Facebook message as we were driving through the town they were currently stopped in.  This sort of thing makes me so happy, I love meeting people “in real life”.  So if you ever notice we are going to be rolling by your neck of the woods, drop me a note!!

Coming This Week: February 21st – 27th

From the beach to the desert!  We are wrapping up our time in California, well for a few weeks anyhow.  This week will be spent in Arizona before making our way to Nevada.

Song of the Week: Mirror in the Bathroom – The English Beat

Week in Review: I wish I could say we enjoyed another week of California sunshine but honestly it rained most of the time.  As we are leaving for Arizona right now it is once again blue skies. Oh well.  The crummy weather couldn’t make the week too bad since we were able to have dinner with two of our favorite people, Lynn of Rocky Creek and her daughter Kat.   Seeing Kat is always a highlight of our California time and visiting with Lynn was a huge bonus.   Safe travels back to Rocky Creek.

Song of the Week: Europe – The Final Countdown

Week in Review: I’m late posting this week because we had so much fun over the weekend.  We weren’t able to join the rest of our family in Iowa to celebrate a wedding, instead we joined up with some California cousins who also couldn’t go.  They live in Petaluma and I am really starting to think that life there might be amazing.  We had a great time hanging out, trying some beers at Lagunitas Brewing Co and even visited a vinery.  Just sharing some great laughs with family.

Melatonin

There is certainly lots of “advice” we can give on traveling, but I try to keep these Travel Tuesday posts a bit more focused on tips for living on the road.  Little ways we deal with being itinerant, as well as not having a residence to go back to.  We don’t ever look forward to sleeping in our own bed, because we don’t have one.  My folks have a hard time getting a good nights rest in a hotel, that is just something you have to get past in our line of work.  I’m not saying that some people we work with don’t carry their own pillow and such but you honestly never know what you will get in a hotel bed.

That is just the half of it.  We prefer to sleep with the heavy room curtains open, waking better with some natural light.  That’s not gonna be an option when there is a neon sign shining in the window.  So once again a preferred routine is mucked up.  What can we do?  Noise doesn’t wake me but changes in light do.  We have tried a number of things over the years but the one thing that consistently helps with a full night’s sleep is Melatonin.

Five more minutes

Five more minutes

I hadn’t thought to share this until last week; after spending some time with members of the marketing team from our client.  One person remarked on getting little sleep and being frustrated that he had forgotten to pack melatonin.  Well yeah!!!  That stuff works.  Now it isn’t a sleep aid but instead a supplement that helps in getting your body into a natural sleep rhythm.  Take it about 30 minutes before you want to be asleep and you may just benefit like us.

I wish you all sweet dreams and bright mornings.
