Song of the Week: The Reckoning Song by Asaf Avidan & The Mojos (Wankelmut Remix)

Week in Review: We did in fact see Star Wars again, I think there might be one more showing in the cards for us.  Last week was all about being with the Van Gelders, lots of good nephew time and LOTS of snow.

Coming This Week: December 27th – January 2nd

While our winter break is a bit short this year, it’s not been short on fun.  Last week was a great visit with my family in central Illinois; today we are heading north.  This week we will be with Josh’s big fun family.  For Christmas we decided to skip exchanging gifts with each other and instead attend the January 3rd Bears game in Chicago.  I think that’s the best way to close out our time off before heading back to work.  We will likely be in Indianapolis for most of the month.

Song of the Week: Satellite Radio – Steve Earle, With so many people on the road this weekend I’m sure more than a few are listening to the satellite radio.

Week in Review: After leaving work we had a few quiet days with my folks before the rest of the family arrived, we were able to head out and see Star Wars one afternoon.  There really is nothing better than a matinée, I am betting we will go see the movie again this week.  Lots of good food and good times were shared with my brother and his wonderful family.  We are a small family but fill the house with love.

Coming This Week: August 30th – September 5th

We have a few days left in Detroit before our mini-cation.  This coming weekend will see us visiting Chicago, the original plan was to meet up with another couple to attend the US vs. Australia rugby match at Soldier Field, but now we are also going to the Bears preseason game!!!  Very exciting.  Next week is slightly up in the air, there is one stop scheduled at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia but after that it’s not finalized.

Week in Review: This turned out to be a fun week.  While in the office we caught up with favorite compatriots, met with the boss man and had a great talk, went to a Tigers game, and attended a little work party.  Not to shaby.

Every Thing Learned Has Value

Years ago we worked on a project called Reflections: The American Funeral, this tour was a multi-year undertaking took us across the country to both small and large communities. People often balked at the thought of a funeral tour but enter any museum and what do you find? The funerary artifacts of a culture. We study their lives from how they honored the dead. While at the Nelson Atkins a year ago, what was most striking in a special exhibit on Saudi Arabia were archeological finds from tombs.

Reflections-Washington, DC-3.8-10 (45)

There was once a reporter who, after learning about our work with this project called it one of our less glamorous assignment. I beg to differ, this was actually a very glamorous project. We were special guests in communities, attended conventions with well known public figures, met governors, and had access to countless media resources. Getting this truck noticed was much easier than many others. It makes me thankful that I was involved with it. By taking part in Reflections I gained exposure and experience in many avenues of the event marketing industry.  The owner at the time Harry, was wonderful in his faith that we could manage and represent a project he closely advocated to see created. I gained a trusted relationship with future mentor, made contacts that I would be lost without, and friendships I cherish. Working on Reflections was everything glamorous. The value from this less conventional project was immeasurable.

Song of the Week: Amy Winehouse – You Know I’m No Good

Week in Review: I can’t tell you how many hours we spent standing in a parking lot working on minor truck and trailer issues.  Things don’t work the same after sitting for two months.  It was wonderful to be in Maryland again, seeing some friends and taking in some great food.

More Tips When Hitting The Road

This is another post that is focused on helping folks who are new to the experiential marketing tour industry but anyone hitting the road could use. How we live is much different that those traveling for pleasure or in an RV.

There are always a string of questions we get once someone learns just how much we travel.  From how long, to do you like it; it’s understandable that how we can be normal while not living normally is interesting. So I’ve gathered a few questions to help newbies.

How do you get your hair cut? – I could say that I use Yelp, but it’s more than that.  I tend to use salons associated with Bumble and Bumble (it’s a sign of quality and training), then compare offerings on Yelp.  I have a PDF that I can show stylist of my preferred cut and a “color card”.

How do you fill prescriptions? – I would highly recommend Walgreens, they are the only service I have found that is completely interlinked.  Unlike say Walmart you don’t need to call ahead to have a prescription transferred, they can pull it up for you and accept our insurance.

How do you get your mail? – Nearly everyone starts using a mail service after thier first year.  I am referring to a UPS Store or a Mailboxes Inc, not a PO box.  There are lots of things that will not ship or bill to a PO box but will work just fine to one of these other services.  We have only used UPS Stores and while it is not a flawless service it works for us.

How do you do laundry? – After being on the road this long it is hardly a second thought but I was just asked this. Ninety percent of the time we use the washer and dryers at hotels.  Most of hte facilities we stay at have a guest laundry room, some like Candlewood Suites have free laundry (a great perk).  I would suggest using Tide pods or the like (saves you from accidents with other detergent formats) and storing your dirty laundry bag in the tractor’s sidebox if possible.  You may not realize it but your space will get stinky.  We also use a could of those little balls for gym shoes to help keep things from getting funky.  Quarters will become a hot commodity!
